What is it?
The Complex Patient Register provides a live view of all inpatients flagged as complex discharges in the Admitted Patient Register.
It’s used to record and manage key details driving discharge complexity - including barriers, actions, expected timeframes, and destination plans. Patients can also be escalated to the Complex Patient Escalation List if further oversight is required.
This component supports collaboration between ward, flow, and executive teams to proactively manage and resolve complex discharges.
Why it matters
Resolve complexity faster and maintain patient flow.
The Complex Patient Register helps teams stay aligned on complex discharge planning, ensuring that delays and bottlenecks are addressed early.
Key benefits:
- See all complex inpatients in one place: Monitor every patient currently flagged as complex.
- Record and manage discharge barriers: Capture reasons for complexity, expected resolution actions, and target discharge timeframes.
- Enable proactive planning: Address risks early and coordinate discharge pathways with care partners.
- Support collaboration: Connect ward, flow, and executive teams to manage and resolve complex discharges efficiently.
- Escalate high-impact cases: Send stalled or complex patients to the Escalation List for senior review.
How to use it
Filter to focus your view
Use the filters at the top of the dashboard to refine which patients you see:
- Ward Division / Ward Type / Ward: Narrow results to specific divisions, ward types, or individual wards.
- Consultant Specialty: Focus on patients under a particular clinical specialty.
- Flow Category: Filter by the SystemView Flow categoriesgories - Passive, Risk, or OK.
- Order By: Sort results by ward, length of stay (LOS), or other key fields.
- Patients Shown: Display either Top 30, Top 100, or All patients.
- Patient: Search for a specific patient using their patient ID.
ℹ️ Note: Filter options may vary depending on your environment — some sites may display additional filters.
Review complex patient insights
Use the Complex Patient Register table to view and update details for all inpatients currently marked as complex. Each row represents an individual patient and contains editable fields for recording discharge information.
After making updates, select Save in the bottom-right corner to apply changes.
Tile Name | What It Shows |
Total Complex Patients | Displays the total number of complex patients within your selected filters. |
Complex Patients Table | Summarises patient details and discharge actions to keep complex cases visible and moving. You can also record and update complexity reasons, planned actions, target discharge timeframes, and discharge destinations - giving a clear snapshot of each patient’s progress and next steps. |
💡 Tip: If a case requires executive attention, select ‘Y’ in the Escalation List field to add the patient to the Escalation List.
How it works
The Complex Patient Register automatically populates with patients marked as complex in the Admitted Patient Register.
Users can update reasons for complexity, record discharge actions, and track progress toward resolution. It serves as a shared workspace for Bed Management, Patient Flow, and Clinical Teams to monitor, review, and escalate cases when necessary.
SystemView logic
- Flow Length of Stay (Flow LoS): Represents the expected period of time a patient should stay on a ward to maintain optimal patient flow, based on historical demand patterns. It helps identify patients who have exceeded or are at risk of exceeding their expected stay.

- Risk of Hospitalisation (RoH): A predictive measure estimating the likelihood that a patient will be readmitted to hospital within 30 or 60 days post-discharge. It highlights patients who may require additional discharge planning or follow-up to reduce readmission risk.
