What is it?

The Complex Patient Escalation List provides a live summary of patients whose discharge barriers are highly complex or require attention from leadership and flow teams.

Patients appear here after being escalated from the Complex Patient Register, allowing these teams to monitor progress, review barriers, and coordinate actions for patients significantly impacting patient flow or long stays.

Why it matters

Keep leadership and flow teams focused on the patients impacting flow the most.

This component brings together the most complex discharge cases for coordinated management and accountability. It ensures visibility across hospital leadership structures and supports timely action for patients whose stays are delayed by systemic or external factors.

Key benefits:

  • Enable high-level oversight: Give leadership and flow teams a live view of complex discharges requiring intervention.
  • Prioritise resources: Focus attention on cases needing multi-service coordination.
  • Promote accountability: Record actions, responsible leads, and follow-up outcomes.
  • Reduce delays: Support targeted intervention to restore bed capacity and maintain flow.

SystemView logic

  • Flow Length of Stay (Flow LoS): Represents the expected period of time a patient should stay on a ward to maintain optimal patient flow, based on historical demand patterns. It helps identify patients who have exceeded or are at risk of exceeding their expected stay.
