What it is
The Subspecialty Reviews component provides a live overview of patients currently in the Emergency Department (ED) who are waiting for completion of a subspecialty review or consult. It highlights how long each patient has been waiting, how many requests are outstanding per specialty team, and where these patients are located within the ED.

Why it matters
Track subspecialty review demand in real time to reduce bottlenecks and improve patient flow.
- Identify patients waiting more than one hour for review.
- See which specialty teams have the greatest current workload.
- Monitor review requests by area to inform escalation or redistribution of clinical support.
- Improve coordination between ED and subspecialty teams through transparent, up-to-date information.
How to use it
Filter to focus your view
Use the filters at the top of the component to narrow results:
- Area: Filter to a specific zone within the Emergency Department.
- Subspecialty Team: View patients awaiting review by a selected team (e.g. Orthopaedics, General Surgery).
Review key metrics
The Summary Metrics at the top of the component show:
- Total patients currently waiting for completion of review.
- Patients currently waiting >1 hour since request.
- Total subspecialty review requests today, giving context to daily demand.
Monitor demand by team and area
| Chart name | What it shows |
| Patients waiting for a Subspecialty Review by Time Waiting and Subspecialty Team | Each bar represents a patient, showing the waiting time (in hours), the patient's unique identifier and the team responsible for their review. Bars are ordered from longest to shortest wait. |
| Patients waiting for a Subspecialty Review by Subspecialty Team | Displays the total number of patients currently waiting per team. This is useful for identifying where workload pressure points are. |
| Patients waiting for a Subspecialty Review by Area | Shows how many patients are waiting for a subspecialty review in each ED area, helping leaders balance patient flow and staff allocation. |
| Patients waiting for a Subspecialty Review by Time (trend) | Plots patient counts by hour since midnight, distinguishing those waiting longer than one hour. Helpful for spotting peak periods and escalation needs. |
Explore patient details
At the bottom of the component, the Patients waiting for a Subspecialty Review table lists all current patients awaiting review, including:
- UR number and patient identifiers
- Subspecialty team
- Area within the ED
- Request and waiting times
💡 Tip: You can add the patient list to a MyList › or MyHub › to include this data in your custom dashboards for rapid situational awareness.
How it works
The component draws directly from real-time ED encounter data. It identifies patients with an active subspecialty review request and calculates elapsed time since the request was logged.
Calculation logic
- Time waiting for a Subspecialty Review (hr) = Current time − Time subspecialty review request logged
- Waiting >1 hour = Requests with elapsed time >60 minutes
Patients are visually colour-coded:
How it helps you
- Maintain situational awareness: See at a glance how many patients are awaiting consults and where.
- Prioritise reviews efficiently: Identify longest waits to direct attention where most needed.
- Support escalation: Quickly visualise subspecialty teams under pressure.
- Enable proactive communication: Facilitate collaboration between ED and subspecialty clinicians.
- Improve patient experience: Reduce avoidable delays to admission or discharge decisions.
Best practices
How often should I use it?
| What to Do | How Often | Who Should Do It | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Review waiting times and team loads | Throughout each shift |
Nurse in Charge, Shift Coordinator | Identify review bottlenecks early |
| Check trends since midnight | During AM and PM handover | Clinical Lead, Shift Team Leader | Inform escalation and resource allocation |
| Review or export patient list for escalation discussion | As required | ED Admin, Leadership Team | Share data during peak load or delay meetings |
Pair with these components and features
- Department Now > Department Overview: View total ED occupancy and flow alongside subspecialty review demand to spot pressure points and bottlenecks.
- Trends > Subspecialty Reviews: Compare current wait times with historical trends by specialty or hour to identify recurring escalation patterns.
- Interact: Add Subspecialty Reviews tiles to a custom dashboard with other live ED metrics (e.g. Department Overview, Admissions) for a real-time command view.
- Inpatient Domains (e.g. Beds or Surgery): Link review delays with ward capacity and inpatient demand to coordinate timely admissions.
Tips for success
- Use the Subspecialty Team filter to focus on the teams with high wait times.
- Regularly check patients waiting >1 hour and escalate to the relevant specialty.
- Build a MyHub › dashboard combining Subspecialty Reviews, Situation Report, and Admissions & Discharges for a complete ED snapshot.
- Export the patient list to Excel for reporting or daily huddles. See How to export from SystemView › for instructions.
