Getting started with the Beds domain

Transform bed management with real-time insights

The Beds domain in SystemView gives hospitals a unified, real-time view of inpatient demand, capacity, and flow.
It helps teams anticipate pressure points, coordinate discharges, and manage complex patients more efficiently, creating a hospital-wide picture of bed availability and flow performance.

In this article:

What the Beds domain does

Managing inpatient beds requires coordination across wards, teams, and systems. Without clear visibility, bottlenecks can quickly build up and impact patient care.
The Beds domain provides the clarity and shared logic teams need to manage flow, forecast constraints, and plan for tomorrow’s demand today.

Key benefits

  • Real-time command centre: Monitor every patient and identify capacity risks across wards and divisions in real time.
  • Intelligent forecasting: Predict future occupancy with advanced length-of-stay modelling and patient-level discharge insights.
  • Automated bed meetings: Coordinate effectively with live demand and capacity views across divisions and wards.
  • Dynamic discharge management: Track morning discharges and performance against calculated targets.
  • Readmission prevention: Identify patients at higher risk of readmission using predictive analytics to support safer discharge planning.

How the Beds domain is structured

The domain is divided into groups that align with key stages of inpatient management.

Category What it helps you do
🔗 Inpatient Demand & Capacity Monitor current occupancy, scheduled demand, and forecasted bed needs.
🔗 Complex Patients Management Identify, manage, and escalate patients with barriers to discharge.
🔗 Risk of Hospitalisation & Readmissions Analyse 30- and 60-day readmission trends to support discharge improvement.
🔗 Length of Stay & Inpatient Flow Analysis Track LoS trends, discharge timing, and ward performance over time.

Together, these components create a complete operational view that supports both daily decision-making and long-term service planning.

Who uses the Beds domain

The Beds domain supports collaboration between clinicians, operational leaders, and flow coordinators.

Role What they use it for
Patient Flow Managers Monitor live bed status and manage daily allocation decisions.
NUMs & Ward Leaders Review occupancy, discharges, and ward-level demand.
Hospital Command Centre Teams Use forecasting tools to anticipate capacity shortfalls and allocate resources.
Executives & Operations Managers Track hospital-wide flow and readmission trends to guide improvement initiatives.
Allied Health & Discharge Coordinators Identify medically fit or complex patients and target early discharge planning.

How to get started

  1. View your current occupancy
Start with Inpatient Flow Monitor > Hospital Overview for a whole-of-hospital snapshot of current bed use, available capacity, and Flow Length of Stay (LoS) categories.
  2. Drill into ward-level performance
Use Ward View > Ward Overview to review occupancy, outliers, and current patient lists in more detail.
  3. Forecast bed demand
Open the Inpatient Occupancy Forecaster > Live Inpatient Occupancy Forecaster to predict when wards or divisions will reach overcapacity.
  4. Identify complex patients
Access the Complex Patients > Admitted Patient Register to flag patients with discharge barriers and view risk profiles using Flow LoS and Risk of Hospitalisation (RoH) data.
  5. Track readmissions
Review Risk of Hospitalisation > Readmission Trends to analyse predicted versus actual readmission rates at ward, specialty, or doctor level.
  6. Analyse discharge patterns and length of stay
Use Discharge Trends and LoS Trends & Ward Dynamics to identify discharge timing issues and plan improvement strategies.

Tips for success

  • Use Flow LoS and RoH together. Flow LoS highlights potential long-stay bottlenecks, while RoH identifies future readmission risk.
  • Update capacity in real time. Use the Bed Capacity Monitor to keep SystemView data accurate for daily bed meetings.
  • Build MyHub dashboards. Combine tiles and charts from Beds components for your own patient flow command centre and dashboards.
  • Pair with other domains. The Beds domain connects closely with Surgery (for post-op admissions) and Emergency Department (for admission pressure).
  • Review complex patients daily. Early identification prevents extended stays and supports timely discharges.
